In reading Water into Wine by Stephen Verney there is a great discussion of going up (GK. Ano) and going down (GK. Kato) in Johns Gospel in reference to Jesus ministry which I’m finding very challenging… and there’ll be more on this later.

John speaks of Jesus going up (GK. Ano) t0 Jerusalem, the temple and also down (GK. Kato) to Galilee etc.

Early in Johns Gospel Jesus refers to himself as being between heaven and earth and Angels going up and down between heaven and earth on/in him…

And so todays Lectio is from a Psalm of ascent – a psalm of going up.

Psalm 125

A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.

¹ Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion;
they will not be defeated but will endure forever.
² Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever.
